Ever since the commencement of the planning process in India, systematic efforts have been made to explore and develop mineral resources, as these finite and non-renewable assets form the backbone of industrial growth.
Chhattisgarh, located in central India and covering an area of about 135,153 sq. km., is blessed with vast reserves of important minerals. The state’s geological formations, ranging from Archaean to Recent, comprise parts of the Bastar and Singhbhum cratons, surrounded by mobile belts and rifts, making it one of the most significant mineral-bearing terrains in the country.
Recognizing the pivotal role of minerals in industrialization, the Government of Chhattisgarh has adopted proactive policies to remove procedural bottlenecks, encourage entrepreneurship, and create a favorable environment for investment in the mineral sector.
The Directorate of Geology and Mining, under the Mineral Resources Department, serves as the state’s nodal agency for mineral exploration. It has successfully identified deposits of diamondiferous kimberlite (Mainpur), gold (Sonakhan), iron ore (Kawardha), corundum (southern Chhattisgarh), and even the rare gemstone Alexandrite (Raipur).
With its abundant resources, skilled workforce, and investor-friendly policies, Chhattisgarh continues to strengthen its position as one of India’s leading states in mineral exploration and industrial development.
